The Liberal Party notes with concern the recent admission by Thames Water that the company does not have the £190 million needed to re-pay an outstanding loan due in the summer of 2024.
The party takes this as a tacit admission that the company is not financially viable long-term. A much heralded £800 million injection of funding from its shareholders now appears to have been in the form of an interest-bearing loan.
The party calls for the UK government to nationalise Thames Water.
Water is a natural commodity. As such, the party believes in public ownership of the water industry to ensure that all revenues are re-invested to secure the nation’s clean water supply.
