Liberal Party NEC Statement - Birmingham City Council Section 114 Notice
#1
The Liberal Party notes with concern at the financial situation at Birmingham City Council and the issuing of a Section 114 notice, declaring that the council is unable to meet its financial obligations.

In this case the council has been forced into this action as it struggles to compensate equal pay claims totalling almost £800 million owed to former workers, many of them women.

Other section 114 notices, such as Croydon, Slough and Woking have been the result of reckless property deals after being encouraged to speculate in commercial property to create alternative revenue streams.

According to a recent investigation by the BBC, local council’s face a combined budget deficit of at least £5.2 billion pounds this year, as they struggle to balance budgets after accumulative cut to the annual financial grant from central government of 40% since 2010.

The Liberal Party believes local government is being forced to bear the brunt of a government failing to control costs at a national level whilst their legal obligations and demands for services are growing.

Furthermore, the party believes that each local authority should be able to raise its own finances levied locally, vis-à-vis Proportional Property Tax /Land Value Taxation, including fees/charges at 100%.
