Liberal Party Leaders Statement – Time to Reform the House of Lords
#1
The unseemly rancour in the Conservative Party over 4 suggested peerages has reiterated just how defunct the House of Lords is.

The squabble appears to be more about privilege, reward and recognition rather than the individual’s commitment or ability to contribute to public life and the review of legislation

Our House of Lords is grossly expensive, between April 2019 and March 2020 £17.7 million were spent on House of lord’s allowances and expenses

Their continued position is not subject to review or limitation regardless of how they perform or not.

The Liberal Party would replace the House of Lords with an elected Senate, with members elected by proportional representation in the nations and regions of the UK.

We should also make provision for the representation of overseas territories like Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, and the Falkland Islands.

Cllr Steve Radford, Leader of the Liberal Party
