Liberal Party NEC statement - UK Household Energy Price Crisis
#1
The Liberal Party views with grave concern the lifting of the energy price cap and the almost immediate increase in domestic prices of over 50%.

Households and families in the country are now facing an unprecedented increase in energy and food prices, potentially pushing millions into poverty and heart-breaking choices between keeping warm and eating.

The party believes that the recent “spring statement” has failed to deliver the one thing household budgets need which is a matching increase in income to offset rising bills. We believe this can most fairly achieved via the benefits and pensions systems and our own policy preference of raising the personal tax threshold to £20k.

We believe that the Chancellor has failed to address the immediate energy price crisis and instead been distracted promoting minor changes to our tax rates which are of no immediate benefit to the nation’s households who face an almost immediate price rise averaging £700 a year.
