This springs dry weather, the driest in 70 years, has again highlighted the vulnerability of our nations water supply and the need to secure and conserve supply in the face of climate change and extremes of rainfall.

In these circumstances the water regulator OFWAT should be working closely with the privatised water companies to further reduce wastage, reduce groundwater extraction and increase storage to protect supply.
The party believes councils should have a greater role monitoring water pollution in their rivers and beaches, holding water companies to account for both wastage and pollution.
The Liberal Party believes too little emphasis has been put on containing losses from the water transport network in previous years, leading to a perpetual cycle of crisis within the industry which should be addressed as a matter of urgency.
