Liberal Party NEC Statement – Local Elections in England on the 1st May 2025 - ReadingLib - 04-30-2025 This Thursday, the 1st May, people across England will have the opportunity to vote in local elections, as well as the by-election in Runcorn & Helsby which the Liberal Party is contesting. The Liberal Party notes that in 9 areas, representing hundreds of thousands of electors, will have no opportunity to exercise their right to vote due to a decision to suspend local elections in advance of a reorganisation of local government. These areas are East Sussex, West Sussex, Essex, Thurrock, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Suffolk and Surrey. In these area’s the electorate is being denied the opportunity to express their view of the changes to local government being imposed without proper consultation. The Liberal Party opposes the way devolution is being implemented and the potential centralisation of power at a county council level and the removal of local accountability at district and town level. Promoted by Stephen Graham on behalf of the Liberal Party, 12 Dayworth Mews, Lundy Lane, Reading, RG30 2RR. |
