Liberal Party NEC Statement - May local elections
Posted by: ReadingLib - 04-08-2018, 06:37 PM - Forum: NEC Press Releases - No Replies

The Liberal Party is proud to announce the distribution of candidates in May’s local elections.

The party will be fielding a total of 19 candidates in Liverpool, as well as the Timperley and Hale Central Ward’s of Trafford, Dogsthorpe in Peterborough, Tyseley & Hay Mills in Birmingham and Norcot in Reading.

The party would urge members in the adjacent areas to consider reaching out to local candidates to assist in their campaigns or to donate to their funds.

The Liberal Party retains a national presence and will be holding its 2nd June Special Assembly in Newcastle upon Tyne to further encourage regional growth.

We would wish to thanks the party’s offices for their support during the nomination process and wish all out candidates the best of luck in their endeavours at the polls on the 3rd May.

Tongue NEC Statement - Northern Ireland Alliance Party call for Assembly
Posted by: ReadingLib - 03-26-2018, 06:55 PM - Forum: NEC Press Releases - No Replies

The Liberal Party notes the call from the Northern Ireland Alliance Party for a new initiative to break the stalemate preventing the effective government of the province via the Stormont Assembly.

The party believe the Alliance Party has taken a very reasoned view, in that whilst the NI parties cannot agree on a power sharing Executive, there could be benefit in reconvening the NI assembly as a mechanism to encourage common ground initiatives.

Northern Ireland has now been without a functioning Executive since January 2017, a counterproductive period of almost 14 months of political deadlock between Unionist and Republican parties.

The lack of a sustainable working legislative prevents the long-term development of the province, and fosters a power vacuum which undermines democracy and good government.

NEC Statement - Liberal Party support for Land Value Taxation(LVT)
Posted by: ReadingLib - 03-20-2018, 08:15 PM - Forum: NEC Press Releases - No Replies

As national councils apply themselves to their annual budget’s, the Liberal Party wishes to publicly reiterate its support for Land Value Taxation(LVT) as its preferred method of funding public services.

In its simplest form it would levy an annual fee based on the value of land in any given area. Those who were not receiving any revenue generated by activity on their land, for example a factory paying rent, would be encouraged to either develop the site to offset the charge, or to sell it at local market rates to those who were willing to do so.

The implementation of LVT would properly fund public services and make for a modest redistribution of wealth whilst encouraging the owners of land banks to develop their holdings to the wider benefit of the community.

The Liberal Party sees LVT as the fairest way of funding hard-pressed public services during a sustained period of unjustified cuts in the name of austerity.

Letter to the Oxford Times - Universal inheritance
Posted by: ReadingLib - 03-18-2018, 06:14 PM - Forum: Local Association Press Releases - No Replies

The wealthiest person in our country owns about £15,000,000,000.  In the next generation heirs will again inherit unearned billions tax-free thanks to current exemptions and reliefs for land and business assets, while other people inherit no capital at all.  This threatens the broad prosperity and stability of our country. A year or two ago, one young man, the Duke of Westminster, inherited £9,000,000,000 at the age of 26.

In order to start to reduce inequality of ownership and wealth, increase opportunity, help repay student loans and reduce poverty, every UK citizen with a UK citizen parent should receive a basic minimum UK Universal Inheritance  (UKUI) - or Universal Basic Inheritance (UBI) - at the age of 25.  It should start modestly at £5,000 but increase over the years, financed by increased taxation of larger fortunes inherited from previous generations.  UK Universal Inheritance is the party policy of the real UK Liberal Party, whose constitution traditionally calls for liberty, property and security for all.

Thanks to exemptions, total Inheritance Tax annual revenue is currently a mere £5,000,000,000, reducing total wealth of UK citizens from £10,000,000,000,000 all the way down to £9,995,000,000,000!  A new Accessions Tax, charged at progressive rates on cumulative lifetime total receipts by beneficiaries, should be introduced, without current unlimited land and business asset exemptions and reliefs.  At the same time the rate of Inheritance Tax, charged on what is given and bequeathed by donors, should be significantly reduced, except for giving to non-UK tax payers.  The Accessions Tax will encourage the wider spread of giving and at the same time claw back the universal amount from more fortunate beneficiaries.

NEC Statement - Saudi Arabian arms deal
Posted by: ReadingLib - 03-14-2018, 07:28 PM - Forum: NEC Press Releases - No Replies

The Liberal Party notes media reports of the imminent announcement of a major trade deal between BAE and the Saudi Government involving the sale of Typhoon jet aircraft amongst other commodities.

Although the deal is being quoted as being worth up to 65 billion pounds, securing several thousand UK jobs, the Liberal Party remains concerned at our countries continued prominent part in the international arms trade.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a barely reformed monarchy, with serious question over its human rights commitments, and is openly engaging in a proxy war in the Yemen which has devastated the country, inflicting 5200 civilian casualties and led to widespread hunger and disease.

The UK has singular failed to re-orientate its domestic aerospace industries away from a heavy reliance on international arms deals, and towards more peaceful and equally profitable international trade.

Such trade offers the same economic benefits and international prestige as the current business model given the right levels of investment and the re-focussing of the business.

Liberal Party NEC Statement - Government plans for local planning powers
Posted by: ReadingLib - 03-09-2018, 08:30 PM - Forum: NEC Press Releases - No Replies

The Liberal Party notes the recent comments from Housing Secretary Sajid Javid MP that some councils could see their planning power’s revoked if they fail to ensure a faster approval rate for housing developments.

Local decision making is a cornerstone of liberalism and allows local communities to have a say in shaping the character of their locality.

The perceived short comings of the local planning process should not be an excuse for central government to impose arbitrary housing targets, which are then approved by an un-elected government inspector as is being muted.

Without local intervention communities risk being blighted with excessive developments which see the loss of gaps between communities creating conurbations or the squeezing in of crowded developments of under sized homes.

The Liberal Party recognises that there is a degree of self-preservation in some planning objections, but centrally imposed housing targets simply fail to address the nation’s regional housing crisis, nor support’s local democracy.

What is the configuration of a paper?
Posted by: issacsamuel - 03-07-2018, 05:04 AM - Forum: General Discussion - News and Views - No Replies

A fundamental paper comprises of three primary parts: presentation, body, and conclusion. Following this configuration will enable you to compose and sort out a paper. In any case, adaptability is critical. While remembering this essential article design, let the theme and particular task control the written work and association.A reasonable presentation with a postulation proclamation and a very much characterized structure , Logically organized body passages which incorporate supporting confirmation from scholastic sources. A reasonable conclusion which rehashes your theme and compresses your exposition and proposition.

  Free Speech
Posted by: DominicAllaway - 02-16-2018, 05:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion - News and Views - No Replies

The right to free expression should be, and historically is, the core of Liberalism. That fundamental right - one essential to progress because without it there can be no clash of ideas and without that we cannot discover the truth - is under attack in our society on a daily basis. Some examples:

1) The 'hate speech' laws;

2) So-called 'Safe Spaces' in universities and concomitant notions like 'no-platforming' of controversial speakers and 'trigger warnings';

3) Self-censorship on pain of social ostracism and worse like dismissal from your job. How many times have readers here bit their tongue for fear of being called a bigot of one sort or another even though you know yourself to be anything but? The term 'Islamophobia' is particularly guilty here because it equates criticism of Islam with racism - which is ridiculous; the UK abolished blasphemy laws many years ago - and dangerous; because it breeds resentment and the sort of fear of being called racist that contributed to the local council turning a blind eye to the 15+ years of mass child abuse in Rotherham.

A core principle of our political creed is under attack. Consequently our party should being speaking up against this all the time, because it is right and out of self-interest. So why are there no threads on LibTalk on this issue???

Anyone any thoughts? I'd welcome ALL contributions. Let's not walk on eggshells anymore in case we commit today's number one sin of 'giving offence' - let's have a real argument!!!

Dominic

Banbury Guardian w/c 5/2/18 - Liberal Party in Banbury, Oxon.
Posted by: ReadingLib - 02-09-2018, 08:19 PM - Forum: Local Association Press Releases - No Replies

Dear Sir,

This is a letter to announce that the Liberal Party (as distinct from the Liberal Democrats) has now ‘set up shop’ in Banbury. We intend to become the progressive and patriotic alternative to today's Marxist-led Labour-in-name-only party and the heartless and chaotic Conservatives, respectively.

We have two main objectives: in the name of democracy help ensure Brexit occurs and to make the creed of Liberalism worthy of respect again.
